On Abandoning Cultural Health Scripts: Somatic Wisdom and the "Oh Shit" Realization That Changes Everything
In a culture where health is often reduced to metrics, aesthetics, and the latest fads, it’s no wonder so many of us feel lost, insecure, frustrated, and disconnected. We’re told to follow morning routines that worked for someone else, obsess, restrict, chase the latest bio-hack, and control our bodies through our minds—as if our minds were inherently superior. But this is a narrow and disembodied script, and it doesn’t reflect the deeper truth of who we are or what we need.
We've been taught to override our body’s signals in pursuit of some external standard of wellness. We've fragmented ourselves. And in that fragmentation, we’ve lost our most reliable compass for truth.
It’s not just some abstract idea — this disconnect is real. It shows up in our nervous systems. In our relationships. In the way we relate to our work, our rest, and our worth. We live in bodies we’ve been trained to control, perform, and perfect—instead of listen to, honor, and collaborate with.
When we disconnect from our bodies, we lose touch with the most constant relationship we’ll ever have: ourselves. The body is where truth lives. It’s where our life force speaks. And when we stop listening, we don’t just feel off — we start chasing. Chasing routines. Chasing validation. Chasing answers outside ourselves, hoping something "out there" will finally restore what we’ve ignored within.
We follow the cultural script: fixate on the body, work harder, be more disciplined, ignore the gut feelings. But well-being isn’t a single-dimensional achievement. It’s not something to master or hack. It’s a harmony — a resonance between who we are and how we live.
Many of us find ourselves cycling through fleeting trends, punishing routines, and rigid expectations, only to discover they never address the deeper yearning within: the desire for a life that feels whole, aligned, and authentically vibrant.
For me, this reimagining wasn’t just an abstract idea — it was a necessity born from my own journey toward inner resonance.
Seven years ago, I started my first business — a personal training and coaching venture in Los Angeles — with a strong desire to take everything I had learned and experienced that had profoundly shaped my own life and use it to help others transform theirs. It began humbly — no equipment, no permit, just one client in a local park — and grew into something I never could have imagined.
Over time, I had the privilege of working along side 100+ incredible individuals from all over the world — from America, South America, South Africa, Australia, Asia, and Europe. And I witnessed so much transformation.
But as the business grew, something inside me started to feel misaligned. Not because I had fallen out of love with service — I hadn't. But because I began to feel tethered to delivering external transformations when what I really longed for — in myself and others — was something deeper: inner coherence.
The trap, I realized, was identity — or rather, the box of identity. People saw me as a personal trainer, and in many ways, I played the part. Because culturally, we cling to labels. We crave clean titles and clear roles. But I never truly related to that role. I was evolving — and something in me knew that the outer transformation would always be incomplete without the inner one.
I found myself dangling physical results as the invitation, hoping it might eventually lead to something more meaningful. In truth, I was still learning to trust my gut, to back my ideas, to speak openly about the kind of guidance I really wanted to offer. I wasn't fully transparent — not with others, and not with myself. But I was becoming aware. And that awareness was a turning point.
So, going on 4 years ago, I made a decision. I stepped back from the grind of traditional fitness coaching to take time for myself — to think, study, and evolve. It was a process that stretched me, stripped me bare. I struggled financially, moved back in to my parents house, then my in laws, questioned everything, and felt my sense of identity unravel.
But underneath it all, I knew life was showing me something. I didn't abandon health—I expanded it. Through deep self-study and lived experience, I began to see health not as a hustle, but as harmony. And through that lens, my own vitality returned—and a new path began to open.
A New Framework for Thriving
Health, as I've come to understand it, is not about rigid discipline or chasing unattainable ideals. It's about cultivating a life that energizes you from the inside out — an "oh shit" moment when the unconscious becomes conscious. A realization that your agency to make aligned choices, form beliefs that reflect your truth, and take embodied action all work together to support your mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being.
This isn't about abandoning fitness or discipline; it's about questioning — asking ourselves deeper questions and inviting in whatever shows up. It's about challenging our own adopted definition of health — which, to me, is almost beyond words. It's our birthright, our life force — a gift we receive, develop, and embody. One that empowers us, strengthens us, and calls us to get out of bed and create our lives, embracing the uncertainty, the challenges, the mystery, and the adventure of being alive.
This perspective didn't land overnight. It's the result of over two and a half decades of personal exploration — of triumphs, failures, grief and clarity — the kind of soul-searching that led me to confront my deepest fears and rediscover my truest desires.
Along the way, I've pulled from psychology, physiology, physiotherapy, neuroscience, spirituality, somatics, and more — not to collect certifications, but to integrate wisdom that aligns with my mission: helping others come home to lives of authentic connection, vitality, and purpose.
A Few Questions to Sit With
If your body were a compass — not a problem to fix — where is it pointing you right now?
Where in your body do you feel most disconnected, most numb? What might that space be trying to tell you that you've been too busy to hear?
Where in your day do you feel most alive, most “you”? Can you feel it in your breath, your spine, your pace?
What parts of you feel overworked but undernourished?
Is your nervous system living in defense… or devotion?
If you stopped trying to "optimize" your life and simply felt it, what would rise to the surface?
What truth have you sensed in quiet moments, but it doesn’t “fit” the idea of who you’re supposed to be?
What if honoring my body’s wisdom is the beginning of reclaiming my energy, my vision, and my creative flow?
Take five quiet minutes today. Close your eyes, take a few deep breaths, and tune into your body. Ask yourself: What do I need right now to feel more whole, more honest, more alive? Then jot down three simple actions you can take — small, aligned steps that support your wellbeing. Even if they feel subtle, they matter. Your energy will notice.
A Final Note
Years ago, I remember desperately wanting to be where I am at today.
At that time I didn’t know how to invite people into the deeper work —
the work of coherence, embodiment, and becoming.
So I stayed a little to long in the role that made sense.
But something in me kept tugging.
Over time — slowly, messily, honestly — I began to listen.
And now? This project — Orange Light — is part of what I’m building from that season of unraveling.
It’s not polished. It’s not finished. But it’s certainly unfinished business. It’s something i’m allowing and trusting its unfolding this time.
If something in this piece spoke to you — even just a line or a feeling —if you feel aligned to living with Harmony in motion, you’re invited to stay close.
